The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) has officially approved a Schengen-style unified tourist visa, paving the way for seamless travel across all six GCC member states. Implementation is expected “soon,” according to UAE Minister of Economy Abdulla bin Touq Al Marri.
“The single [GCC] tourist visa has been approved and is now awaiting implementation. It’s with the Ministry of Interior and relevant stakeholders.”
Al Marri told reporters during the UAE Hospitality Summer Camp press conference.
A regional initiative will soon allow international visitors to explore the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Qatar, Oman, and Kuwait on a single unified visa.
What This Means for Travelers and Businesses
- Simplified Paperwork: Tourists will no longer need separate visas for each GCC country.
- Boost to Bleisure Travel: Encourages blending of business and leisure trips across borders.
- Economic Growth: Expected increase in tourism-related employment and spending.
- Enhanced Regional Branding: Positions the GCC as a unified global travel destination.
According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the UAE alone employed 833,000 people in travel and tourism in 2024. That number is projected to exceed 1 million by 2030, accounting for 1 in every 9 jobs.
Broader Impact and Strategic Vision
The visa initiative is part of the GCC’s broader vision for integrated regional development. By enabling foreign tourists to cross borders effortlessly, the bloc strengthens economic ties and supports its long-term goals under Vision 2030 frameworks adopted by multiple member states.
Who Benefits Most?
- Tourists: Convenience and reduced costs
- SMEs in Tourism: New cross-border packages and experiences
- Investors: Hospitality and travel sectors poised for growth
What’s Next?
While the exact rollout date is pending, sources indicate the new visa system could be operational by Q3 2025. Regional coordination among Ministries of Interior is underway to finalize logistics and digital infrastructure.
