Online Business

The Simplest Way to Sell Online in Dubai

If you sell on Instagram, WhatsApp, or your own website, you still need a license to do it legally. The E-Trader License is the cheapest way to get there, built for one person working from home with no staff.

It is issued by Dubai's Department of Economy and Tourism. You apply online, pay a small fee, and trade legally under your own name. What it cannot do is sponsor a visa or hire a team, and that shapes who it suits.

Who Can Apply

Can an Expat Get an E-Trader License?

The honest answer is more layered than most pages admit. Professional services like design, marketing, IT, and consulting are open to everyone with a valid Dubai residency, expats included, and always have been.

Product selling used to be for UAE and GCC nationals only. That changed. DET opened the Online Seller activity to all nationalities, so an expat can now sell products under it. Other product categories stay national-only, so your scope depends on what you sell.

Confirm my eligibility
  • UAE and GCC nationals living in Dubai, with full activity access
  • Expats on a valid Dubai residency, for professional services
  • Expats selling products under the Online Seller activity
  • Applicants aged 21 or older with a valid Emirates ID
  • Anyone with a verified Dubai address and Makani number
  • Solo founders who do not need a visa from the business

Note: Expat eligibility is activity-specific and can change. Employer-sponsored residents may need an NOC. Riz & Mona confirms your exact scope with DET before you apply, so nothing is rejected at submission.

Limits and Upgrades

The Limits of the E-Trader License

Before you apply, know where this license stops. It lets you trade, promote, and invoice as an individual, but it does not turn you into a company, and that ceiling matters.

You can run the business from home, sell through digital channels, and open a business bank account. You cannot sponsor a visa, hire staff, add partners, or open a physical shop.

When you outgrow those limits, the upgrade is a mainland e-commerce license or a free zone company. We map that path when you are ready, so you never pay for scale you do not need yet.

When to Upgrade

Visa icon

You Need a Residence Visa

The E-Trader License cannot sponsor your own visa. If you need residency from the business itself, you need a mainland e-commerce license or a free zone company.

Riz & Mona sets that up and links your visa to it.

Team icon

You Want to Hire a Team

This license is for one person. The moment you need employees or partners, you have outgrown it.

A mainland or free zone company lets you sponsor staff and add shareholders.

Scale icon

You Are Selling at Scale

Handling large volumes, warehousing, or import and export goes beyond what a home-based permit covers.

A full e-commerce license unlocks the wider UAE market.

Products icon

Your Products Are Restricted

If your product category is not open to expats under the E-Trader route, you need a different structure.

We confirm this and point you to the right license instead.

Banking

Opening Your Business Bank Account

One of the biggest wins of this license is a proper business bank account. It lets you invoice clients, take card payments, and keep your business money separate from your personal funds.
