Free Zone Overview

What Is UAQ Free Trade Zone?

Most free zones in the UAE charge you for prestige. UAQ Free Trade Zone charges you for business. This government-run free zone in the Emirate of Umm Al Quwain was established in 1987 as the Ahmed Bin Rashid Port and Free Zone, and it has quietly become one of the sharpest options for founders who want UAE credibility without the UAE price tag.

UAQ FTZ sits on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Zayed Road, the main artery connecting Sharjah, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi. It is roughly 30 minutes from Dubai International Airport and within an hour of Sharjah International Airport. That location matters for anyone in trading, logistics, or light manufacturing. You are close to the ports, the highways, and the airports without paying Dubai rent.

The free zone is operated directly by the Government of Umm Al Quwain, which brings a level of regulatory stability that newer or privately managed free zones cannot always match. The authority runs a single-window setup process and has consistently expanded its infrastructure to include executive offices, co-working desks, warehouses, and long-term land lease plots.

What makes UAQ FTZ genuinely different is its flexibility. You can bundle a commercial and a consultancy license under the same entity. You can start with zero visa allocation and upgrade later. And the industrial land sits right beside the Ahmed Bin Rashid Port gate, now operated by Hutchison Ports, one of the world's leading port operators with a presence in 27 countries. The port's 845-meter quay and 23-hectare yard open real logistics possibilities for businesses that need physical trade infrastructure.

Setup Inclusions

What Does Your UAQ Free Zone Setup Include?

Every UAQ FTZ registration delivers a fully functional legal entity with the documents and access you need to operate, bank, and sponsor visas in the UAE.

Trade License and Certificate of Incorporation

Your UAQ FTZ license is issued by the government authority and carries full legal standing in the UAE. It includes a Certificate of Incorporation confirming your company's registration.

Establishment Card

The Establishment Card is the document that unlocks your visa quota. It identifies your company to immigration and is issued within three to five working days after license approval.

Flexi-Desk or Office Access

Depending on your chosen package, setup includes access to a shared flexi-desk or a private executive office. The free zone also offers co-working space inside its main facility.

Visa Quota Allocation

Your visa quota is assigned based on the office package you select. Zero-visa options are available for founders who only need the license. Quotas scale with office or warehouse upgrades.

Company Name Reservation

The UAQ FTZ authority reserves your trade name as part of the registration process. Name checks are conducted before submission to avoid conflicts with existing registrations.

Single-Window Government Services

The free zone operates as a one-stop shop for licensing, visa processing, and facility access. You deal with one authority rather than navigating multiple government departments.

Dual License Option

Unlike most free zones, UAQ FTZ allows you to add a second license category to your existing entity. A company with a commercial license can acquire a consultancy license without forming a new company.

PRO and Administrative Support

Amaal, the free zone's in-house service partner, provides value-added services for UAQ FTZ clients, including PRO support, banking introductions, and administrative facilitation.

Investment

How Much Does a UAQ Free Zone Company Cost?

UAQ FTZ is built for affordability. The following tiers cover the main package options, but your actual total depends on license type, visa count, office selection, and whether you need dual licensing.

Starter: Zero-Visa License Package

AED 8,000 to AED 12,000

Covers the license fee and registration. No visa allocation included. Best for founders who only need a UAE business license and are not yet ready to sponsor visas. Renewal fees are similar to the initial license cost.

Growth: License with Visa Allocation

AED 14,000 to AED 22,000

Includes the license, establishment card, and a visa quota of one to three visas. Covers flexi-desk or shared office access. Suitable for founders who need UAE residency alongside their license.

Scale: Office or Warehouse Package

AED 25,000 to AED 50,000+

Includes a private executive office or pre-built warehouse, higher visa quota, and full establishment setup. Ideal for businesses that need physical operational space or an industrial setup near the port.

Factors That Affect Your Total Cost

  • License Type

Industrial licenses require physical space and carry higher base costs than service or consultancy licenses.

  • Number of Visas

Each visa allocation adds AED 1,500 to AED 2,500 in processing fees plus e-channel registration of AED 2,150 to AED 2,400 (one-time).

  • Office Selection

Flexi-desk, private office, or warehouse come at different annual rates. Your choice also determines your visa quota.

  • Dual Licensing

Adding a second license category to your entity carries an additional fee but saves the cost of forming a separate company.

  • Activity Scope

Regulated activities may require additional approvals from external authorities, adding time and fees to the process.

  • Pricing Disclaimer

All costs above are indicative and based on publicly available information at the time of writing. Actual costs depend on your specific business activity, visa requirements, and office selection. RIZ & MONA Consultancy provides a personalised quote tailored to your exact setup.

Process

How Do You Set Up a Company in UAQ Free Trade Zone?

The registration process at UAQ FTZ is designed for speed. Most straightforward setups complete within one to three working days once documents are submitted. Industrial licenses and regulated activities may take slightly longer.

Day 1

Define Your Business Activity

Start by selecting the business activities your company will conduct. UAQ FTZ covers over 1,500 approved activities. This decision determines your license type, document requirements, and any additional approvals needed.

Day 1

Choose Your Legal Structure

Select between a Free Zone Establishment (single shareholder), Free Zone Company (two to fifty shareholders), or a branch of an existing company. This also determines your document checklist.

Days 1 to 2

Reserve Your Company Name

Submit your preferred trade name to the UAQ FTZ authority for availability check and reservation. Names must comply with UAE naming regulations and cannot duplicate existing registrations.

Day 2

Submit Documents and Application

Prepare your passport copy, proof of address, and any corporate documents if applicable. Submit the completed application form and all required documents to the free zone. The entire submission can be done remotely.

Days 2 to 3

Make Payment

Pay the applicable license and registration fees. The authority will confirm receipt and proceed with the approval process upon payment.

Days 3 to 5

Receive License and Establishment Card

The trade license and Certificate of Incorporation are typically issued within one to two working days of payment. The Establishment Card, which activates your visa quota, follows within three to five working days.

Weeks 1 to 3

Apply for Visas and Open Bank Account

Once you hold the Establishment Card, you can initiate visa applications for yourself and any employees. Bank account opening runs in parallel and requires personal attendance at the bank or in Dubai for the compliance interview.

Requirements

  • Passport copy of the authorised signatory and all directors

Residency

Can You Get a UAE Visa Through UAQ Free Trade Zone?

A UAQ FTZ trade license entitles your company to sponsor UAE residence visas for shareholders, employees, and their family members. The number of visas your company can sponsor depends on the office package and the quota assigned on your Establishment Card.

You do not need to be physically based in Umm Al Quwain to process your visa. Medical tests and Emirates ID biometrics can be completed in Dubai.

RIZ & MONA Consultancy provides a visa cost estimate as part of your personalised setup plan and manages every government submission on your behalf.

  • Investor / Partner Visa: For company shareholders and owners
  • Employee Work Visa: For staff hired under the company
  • Dependent Visa: For spouse, children, and eligible family members
  • Domestic Worker Visa: Where applicable
  • Golden Visa: For qualifying investors meeting the AED 2 million investment threshold

Important Notice

RIZ & MONA Consultancy does not guarantee UAE visa approval. All visa decisions are made by UAE immigration authorities. Eligibility and processing timelines are subject to change based on current regulations. If you are outside the UAE when the entry permit is issued, you must arrive within 60 days to complete medical and biometric requirements.

Opening a Bank Account for Your UAQ Free Zone Company

UAQ FTZ companies are eligible to open corporate bank accounts across the UAE banking system. The free zone authority has signed an MoU with National Bank of Fujairah (NBF), which creates a preferred relationship for registered businesses. However, most major UAE banks will consider UAQ FTZ company applications across a range of activities. Banking remains the most time-consuming part of business setup in the UAE.

Banks, Timelines and What You Should Know

Banks Commonly Used by UAQ FTZ Entities

National Bank of Fujairah (NBF)Preferred MoU partner
RAKBANKAccessible for new companies
Emirates NBDWidely used, compliance-focused
Mashreq BankGood for trading companies
ADCBStrong for SMEs with track record
Wio BankDigital-first alternative, faster approval

Realistic Bank Account Timelines

UAE Resident Applicant2-4 weeks
Non-Resident Applicant6-12 weeks
High-Risk or Regulated Activities8-16 weeks
Digital Bank (Wio or similar)3-7 days
  • Submitting without a clear business plan is the most common cause of delays. Banks require it.
  • The free zone does not influence the bank's decision. Account approval is entirely the bank's call.
  • Applying to multiple banks simultaneously can backfire. Rejections are shared across the system.
  • Most traditional banks require at least one in-person compliance meeting. Skipping it is not an option.
  • Choosing a bank that does not serve your industry or activity type leads to avoidable rejections.
  • RIZ & MONA Consultancy provides banking support including application preparation, bank matching, and compliance review. We do not guarantee account approval. All decisions rest with the bank.
The UAQ FTZ Difference

What Makes UAQ Free Trade Zone Different from Other UAE Free Zones

01
Hutchison Ports UAQ

World-Class Port Access Right Beside the Free Zone

The Ahmed Bin Rashid Port was handed to Hutchison Ports in 2018. Hutchison operates 52 ports across 27 countries, making this one of the most professionally managed port facilities in the Northern Emirates. The port has 845 meters of quay wall, with 400 meters capable of handling ocean-going vessels. There is 118,000 square meters of land reserved for light industrial development right beside the port gate.

02
UAQ Vision 2033

Infrastructure in Motion: Logistics City and Cargo Airport

In 2024, His Highness Sheikh Rashid bin Saud bin Rashid Al Mu'alla unveiled UAQ Vision 2033, a long-range investment roadmap focused on logistics, manufacturing, tourism, healthcare, and renewable energy. Two major projects are already in development: a purpose-built Logistics City designed for warehousing and last-mile delivery, and a Cargo Airport intended to position Umm Al Quwain as a regional air freight hub.

03
Dual License in a Single Entity

Two License Categories Under One Company

Very few free zones in the UAE allow a company to hold two license categories under one entity. UAQ FTZ does. A company with a commercial license can add a consultancy or service license without creating a new entity, separate registration, or additional legal structure. This is a practical and cost-saving feature for founders who run mixed-activity businesses.

04
Industrial Land and Walk-to-Work Accommodation

Affordable Industrial Infrastructure with On-Site Staff Housing

UAQ FTZ is one of the only free zones in the UAE to offer both affordable industrial land plots on leases up to 25 years and dedicated on-site staff accommodation. The accommodation is within walking distance of the free zone facilities. For manufacturers, assemblers, and packagers, this combination of land access, port proximity, and staff housing is extremely difficult to replicate in any other UAE free zone at a comparable cost.

05
Award-Winning Setup Environment

Recognised for Startup Support and Investor Satisfaction

UAQ FTZ has received the Qadat Al Tagheer Award for Best Free Zone for Startups and SMEs and the Asia One Award for both Best Upcoming Free Zone for Small to Large-Scale Industries and Highest Investor Satisfaction. These recognitions reflect the free zone's commitment to keeping the setup process practical, affordable, and well-supported for businesses of all sizes.

Business Setup Process

Why Work With RIZ & MONA Consultancy for Your UAQ Free Zone Setup?

Our Advantage

1

We Know What Banks Actually Need

Most companies get licensed without a problem. Banking is where things fall apart. Our team reviews your company structure, activity type, and shareholder profile before you apply, so your application goes to the right bank with the right documentation. That preparation significantly reduces rejection risk.

2

We Quote Accurately from the Start

UAQ FTZ pricing is not one-size-fits-all. The final cost depends on your license type, visa count, office choice, and whether you need dual licensing. We give you an itemised cost breakdown before you commit, so there are no surprises when you pay.

3

We Handle the Full Journey, Not Just the License

Getting a license is step one. Visas, Emirates ID, bank account, and annual compliance are the rest of the journey. We stay involved after the license is issued and manage each phase so you do not have to coordinate between multiple service providers.

4

We Match the Structure to Your Real Business

Whether you plan to trade physical goods, provide consultancy, hire staff, or run a solo operation, the correct structure and license combination matters. We have worked with thousands of UAE company formations since 2009 and understand the nuance between what looks right on paper and what actually works in practice.
