Free Zone Overview

What Is RAKEZ?

RAKEZ is not a typical free zone. Born from the merger of RAK Free Trade Zone and RAK Investment Authority in 2017, it spans over 33 million square meters across six purpose-built zones in Ras Al Khaimah, roughly 45 minutes from Dubai.

What makes it different is the range. RAKEZ is not just a licensing authority. It provides industrial land, warehouses, academic zones, coworking spaces, and built-in government services under one roof. Manufacturers, digital entrepreneurs, educators, and logistics companies all operate here side by side.

In the first half of 2025, RAKEZ recorded a 43% increase in new company registrations compared to the same period in 2024. Entrepreneurs from over 100 countries already know what that number reflects: serious infrastructure at genuinely competitive pricing.

Zero-visa license with flexi-desk or virtual setup. The entry point for remote operators, e-commerce businesses, and founders who do not need UAE residency immediately.

One investor or manager visa, establishment card, immigration file, and shared or coworking office. The most common starting point for solo founders and small teams.

Growth

AED 25,000 and above

Up to 7 can be bundled under one license, specialist activities may carry extra fees.

Process

How RAKEZ Company Formation Actually Works

Most clients are surprised by how quick and direct the RAKEZ setup process is. There is no bureaucratic maze here. Much of the process can be handled online through RAKEZ Portal 360. Here is what the journey looks like from start to finish.

Day 1

Choose Your Activity and License Type

Define exactly what your business will do. RAKEZ supports over 4,000 activities across its license categories. Picking the right license type from day one prevents costly amendments later.

Days 1 to 2

Select Your Legal Structure and Facility

Decide whether you need an FZE, FZC, or branch. Choose your facility from flexi-desk, private office, or warehouse based on your activity and how many visas you require. Your facility directly determines your visa quota.

Days 2 to 3

Reserve Your Trade Name

Submit your proposed company name for approval. Names must comply with RAK Department of Economic Development guidelines. Avoid names that are identical to existing registrations or that include restricted words.

Days 3 to 4

Submit Documents and Pay Fees

Submit your application with all required documents. Pay the license fee and any facility deposit. RAKEZ confirms receipt and begins internal review. Once approved, the license is typically issued within 24 hours of payment.

Days 4 to 5

Sign Lease and Receive Incorporation Documents

Sign the facility lease agreement and receive your trade license, certificate of incorporation, and MoA. Your company is now legally formed.

Week 2

Apply for Visas

Open your immigration file using your establishment card. Apply for investor, manager, or employee visas. The standard processing time is 5 to 10 working days. Medical testing and Emirates ID biometrics are conducted within the RAKEZ center.

Weeks 2 to 4

Open Your Corporate Bank Account

With your license and incorporation documents in hand, apply to your chosen UAE bank. RAKEZ licenses are accepted by all major UAE banks. Timeline varies by bank and applicant profile. RIZ & MONA Consultancy coordinates the introduction and prepares your banking file.

What Documents Do You Need to Set Up in RAKEZ?

Setting up in RAKEZ requires a standard set of personal and corporate documents. What you need depends on whether you are registering as a new company or opening a branch of an existing one.

  • Proof of residential address (utility bill or bank statement, last 3 months)
  • CV or professional profile (required for certain service or professional licenses)
  • No Objection Certificate (NOC) from current UAE sponsor, if applicable
  • Proposed business plan (required for some industrial and academic license types)

Corporate Shareholders

Translation into Arabic may be required for non-English documents. Always confirm current requirements with your consultant before preparing your file.

Residency

UAE Residency Through RAKEZ: Your Options Your Options

Every RAKEZ license includes a direct path to UAE residency. Your visa type depends on your role and whether you are bringing family members along.

RAKEZ processes visas in-house, which means faster turnaround than most UAE free zones. Once your license is issued, the residency process can begin immediately.

Dependent visa sponsorship requires a minimum monthly salary of AED 3,000 to AED 4,000. RIZ & MONA confirms current thresholds as part of your setup proposal.

  • Investor Visa: owners and shareholders
  • Manager Visa: appointed directors
  • Employee Visa: hired staff
  • Dependent Visa: spouse, children, parents
  • Freelance Visa: RAKEZ permit holders
  • Visit Visa: 30 to 90 day stays
  • RAK Visa for Life: annual long-term residency

Important Notice

Visa fees and eligibility are set by UAE immigration and subject to change. RIZ & MONA confirms current requirements as part of your personalized proposal.

Banking Support

Corporate Banking for Your RAKEZ Company

Banking is where many RAKEZ setups slow down, not because of the license, but because of the application. UAE banks have tightened their compliance requirements significantly, and a poorly prepared banking file is the most common reason for delays.

RAKEZ licenses are accepted by every major bank in the country.

Realistic Account Opening Timelines

  • UAE Resident with Clean Profile

    2-4 weeks

  • Non-Resident Applicant

    4-8 weeks

  • High-Risk or Complex Activity

    8-12 weeks

  • Digital / Neobank Option

    1-3 weeks

How RIZ & MONA Helps With RAKEZ Banking

  • Profile Assessment: Our team reviews your business model, activity type, and shareholder profile to identify the most suitable banking institution for your RAKEZ company before any application is submitted.

  • Bank Matching: We prepare your complete banking dossier, select the right bank for your business profile, and coordinate the relationship introduction on your behalf. RAKBANK in particular has a natural affinity with RAK-registered businesses.

  • Documentation and Introduction: We prepare your banking file the way compliance teams read it, with a clear business narrative, accurate source-of-funds explanation, and expected transaction flows, so your application is ready before it reaches the bank.

  • Applying before your license and establishment card are fully issued

  • Submitting vague business descriptions not linked to specific RAKEZ activities

  • Choosing a bank that does not handle your expected transaction types

  • Failing to provide proof of operations such as contracts, invoices, or a website

  • Not preparing a clear answer to the source of funds question
