What Is a UAE Visa Renewal?

A UAE visa renewal is the process of extending your residence permit before it expires. It is not automatic. You need updated documents, a fresh medical fitness test, a renewed Emirates ID, and processing through GDRFA or the relevant free zone authority.

Every residence visa has a fixed validity of 1, 2, 3, or 10 years depending on the type. Once it expires, a grace period begins. After the grace period ends, overstay fines of AED 50 per day accrue until the visa is renewed, cancelled, or you leave the UAE.

The renewal process is nearly identical to the original visa application. The critical difference is timing. Starting too late is the single most common cause of avoidable fines and residency complications in Dubai.

Checklist

Documents Required for Visa Renewal in Dubai

  • Current UAE residence visa copy
  • Current Emirates ID (front and back)
  • Valid UAE health insurance policy

Standard Processing Time

3-10

Working Days

For most visa types. Golden Visa renewals take 2 to 4 weeks due to investment or credential re-verification by ICP or GDRFA.

Start Early: These timelines assume complete, accurate submission. Delays in employer coordination, free zone permit renewal, or investment verification extend processing. Start at least 60 days before expiry to eliminate any risk of overlap with the grace period.

Processing Timeline

Most renewals complete in 3 to 10 working days from complete submission. Freelance renewals take longer due to the two-stage process. Golden Visa renewals require investment re-verification.

  • Employment visa renewal: 3 to 7 working days
  • Family visa renewal: 5 to 7 working days per dependent
  • Investor visa renewal: 5 to 7 working days
  • Freelance visa renewal: 7 to 10 working days (two-stage)
  • Golden Visa renewal: 2 to 4 weeks (re-verification)
Overstay and Fines

UAE visa grace period

Grace Period Rules

Standard UAE residence visas carry a 60-day grace period after expiry. During this window, you remain legally in the UAE and no fines apply. This was previously 30 days for most categories.

Golden Visa and Green Visa holders receive an extended grace period of 90 to 180 days. This gives longer-term residents additional time to manage renewal or transition to a different status.

You cannot exit and re-enter the UAE on an expired visa during the grace period. If you plan to travel, complete your renewal before the visa expires or your re-entry may be refused.

UAE overstay fines

Overstay Fines and Consequences

From the first day after the grace period ends, a fine of AED 50 per day applies. This rate was unified across all visa types by ICP on 11 February 2026 and applies in every emirate.

All outstanding fines must be paid in full before any new visa can be issued or renewed, and before you can leave the UAE. A 90-day overstay after the grace period costs AED 4,500 in fines alone.

Prolonged overstay beyond the grace period can trigger an immigration flag. This affects future UAE visa applications and may result in a travel restriction. Fines are paid through ICP, GDRFA, or Amer.

Our Commitment · Renewals

Visa renewal feels simple until something goes wrong. An expired trade licence blocks an investor renewal. A missed medical test delays the whole family. An employer who has not renewed their establishment card stalls an employee's visa.

Over 15 years, we have managed thousands of renewals across every visa category and authority. We know which documents each authority rejects and which sequences must be followed.

Most renewal delays are not caused by the government. They are caused by documents that should have been prepared weeks earlier.
