Fines Accrue Even After You Leave
- An uncancelled visa accrues AED 50/day fines
- Fines persist whether you are in the UAE or not
- All fines must be cleared before any future visa
- 90-day uncancelled overstay costs AED 4,500+

A UAE residence visa does not cancel itself when you leave the country, stop working, or close a business. It must be formally cancelled through GDRFA. An uncancelled visa accrues fines and creates immigration complications that follow you.
UAE visa cancellation is the formal process of terminating an active residence visa through GDRFA or the relevant free zone authority. Once cancelled, your legal right to reside in the UAE under that visa is revoked and a grace period begins.
Cancellation is a legal requirement, not an automatic event. A residence visa does not cancel itself when you leave the country, change jobs, or close a business. It must be actively processed through the correct authority. The Emirates ID is also deactivated as part of the process.
An uncancelled visa remains open in the GDRFA system. Overstay fines of AED 50 per day accrue regardless of whether you are physically in the UAE. This is the most common and most expensive mistake residents make.

Visa cancellation is a legal requirement whenever your residency status changes. These are the most common situations that trigger a mandatory cancellation in Dubai.
Any resident departing the country permanently must cancel their visa. It does not cancel on exit. The GDRFA record stays open.
Switching jobs requires the old employer to cancel your employment visa before the new employer can issue a fresh one.
All employee and dependent visas tied to the trade licence must be cancelled before the company can be deregistered.
Moving from employment to investor, or freelance to employment, requires cancelling the previous visa before applying for the new one.
If the sponsor cancels their visa, all dependent family visas under that sponsor must also be cancelled in the same process.
Staying outside the UAE for 180+ consecutive days automatically nullifies your residence visa. You must then cancel formally.
Each visa type has its own cancellation sequence, authority, and cost. Filter by your category below to see the process, documents, and timeline specific to your visa.

Cancellation costs are lower than visa applications or renewals. Employment visa cancellation is paid by the employer by law. Costs below are for the cancellation process only.

From fine check to cancellation certificate in 1 to 5 working days for most visa types. Employment visas follow a two-stage MoHRE + GDRFA process.
Check for outstanding overstay fines, GDRFA fees, or unsettled labour dues. All must be cleared first.
Gather passport, Emirates ID, visa copy, and category-specific documents. Prepare the cancellation form.
Investor: close company first. Employment: MoHRE labour cancel first. Freelance: close FZ permit.
Submit the cancellation application to GDRFA or ICP. Processing typically takes 1 to 3 working days.
Your Emirates ID is formally deactivated as part of the GDRFA process. This step is mandatory.
GDRFA issues your cancellation certificate. The 30-day grace period begins. Keep this document safely.
After cancellation, most visa holders receive a 30-day grace period to depart the UAE, transition to a new visa, or change status. No fines apply during this window.
Golden Visa and Green Visa holders receive an extended grace period of 60 to 180 days depending on the category. Property sellers get 60 days from the date of the DLD property transfer.
You cannot exit and re-enter the UAE on a cancelled visa during the grace period. Plan your departure or new visa application within this window to avoid complications.
An uncancelled visa does not expire on its own. It remains open in the GDRFA system. Overstay fines of AED 50 per day accrue even if you have left the UAE physically.
If you stay outside the UAE for 180 consecutive days without re-entering, your residence visa is automatically nullified. However, the formal cancellation must still be processed.
Uncancelled visas create immigration flags that appear on future UAE visa applications, employment checks, and border screenings. The flags do not clear until the visa is formally cancelled.
Core documents are the same across all visa types. Additional items depend on your category. The cancellation form is prepared by the processing agent or typing centre.
For employment visa cancellation, the employer must settle all outstanding salary, end-of-service gratuity, unused annual leave, and repatriation costs before the cancellation can proceed. Sponsors can initiate cancellation for visa holders who are outside the UAE through the GDRFA app or Amer centres.
A missed step in the cancellation process creates problems that last years. An unsettled fine, an uncancelled dependent, or an incorrect sequence can turn a routine exit into an immigration issue that blocks your next UAE visa.
