Overview

What Is Trademark Registration

Trademark registration secures legal ownership of your brand in the UAE. Once your name, logo, or slogan is registered with the Ministry of Economy, you gain the exclusive right to use it and to stop others copying it.

The UAE works on a first-to-file basis. The right goes to whoever registers first, not whoever used the mark first. If a copycat files your brand name before you do, you can lose the right to your own name.

Since Cabinet Resolution No. 102 of 2025, government fees sit at about AED 6,500 per class, with SME discounts and a faster route. Protection lasts 10 years and is renewable. Riz & Mona files under this current regime.

Why Register

Why Register a Trademark in the UAE

A registered trademark turns your brand from something you use into something you legally own and can defend, sell, or expand.

Exclusive Legal Ownership

Registration gives you the sole right to use your mark in its class anywhere in the UAE.

Block Copycats

Stop competitors and counterfeiters trading on your name, logo, or reputation.

A Sellable Asset

A trademark is property. It adds value to your business and can be licensed, franchised, or sold.

Power to Enforce

A certificate is your legal basis to act against infringement through the courts and customs.

Room to Go Global

A UAE registration is your base for international protection through the Madrid Protocol.

Required for Growth Deals

Franchising, licensing, and many marketplaces expect a registered mark before they work with you.

The Process

How to Register a Trademark

A clear path from brand idea to a registered trademark certificate.

Step 1

Trademark Search

The register is checked for identical or similar marks, the leading cause of later rejection.

Step 2

File Application

The application is filed with the Ministry of Economy in one class, with Arabic representation.

Step 3

Examination

The Ministry reviews the mark against the rules, usually within about 30 days of filing.

Step 4

Publication

Once accepted, the mark is published in the Trademark Gazette and two local newspapers.

Step 5

Opposition Window

Third parties then have 30 days to file an opposition against the published mark.

Step 6

Registration

With no opposition, the final fee is paid and the 10-year certificate is issued.

Cost

How Much Does Trademark Registration Cost

Since November 2025, government fees sit at around AED 6,500 per class. The catch is that fees are charged per class, with no multi-class filing.

Single Class

~AED 6,500 govt fee

One trademark in one class of goods or services under the 2025 fee regime.

SME Programme

50% reduction

Businesses in the National SME Programme get half off official trademark fees.

Express & Extra

Add-ons apply

One-day examination and each extra class are charged on top of the base fee.

What Changes Your Cost

  • Number of Classes

The UAE charges per class with no multi-class filing, so each class is a separate fee.

  • Express Examination

The one-day examination service adds roughly AED 2,250 to speed up the review.

  • Arabic Translation

An English-only mark needs official Arabic representation, which is billed separately.

  • Madrid Protocol

Converting to an international filing carries a conversion fee, around AED 400 plus country fees.

Pricing Disclaimer

All figures are indicative government fees under Cabinet Resolution 102 of 2025 and exclude professional and translation charges. Filing fees are non-refundable if rejected. Riz & Mona provides a personalised quote for every application.

Avoid Rejection

How to Avoid a Trademark Rejection

The filing fee is non-refundable if your mark is rejected, so getting it right the first time matters. These are the common reasons, and the fix for each.

01
Too Generic

The mark is descriptive or generic

Names like Best Coffee Dubai are refused. Fix: choose a distinctive, original name with unique elements.

02
Conflict

It clashes with an existing mark

A similar registered mark blocks yours. Fix: run a proper trademark search before filing.

03
No Arabic

Missing Arabic representation

English-only marks are rejected. Fix: include official Arabic representation with the application.

04
Prohibited

It breaks public or legal rules

Marks against morals or using flags and official emblems are barred. Fix: avoid restricted content.

05
Wrong Class

Filed in the wrong class

An incorrect class weakens or voids protection. Fix: classify the goods or services correctly first.

06
Missed Deadline

No response to an objection

Ignoring an objection forfeits the application. Fix: monitor the file and reply within 30 days.
